서석장 / Seo Seok-Jang

서석장은 바다와 산사, 오래된 무덤과 건축, 사람들이 떠난 뒤 남은 흔적을 오랫동안 바라보아 왔다. 그의 여행은 장소를 확인하고 소유하는 이동이 아니라, 낯선 공간 앞에서 멈춰 서서 그곳에 축적된 시간과 침묵을 경험하는 과정이다.

작업은 자연과 건축, 인간의 흔적 사이에 존재하는 미세한 거리에서 출발한다. 강한 대비의 흑백, 거친 입자, 절제된 색채와 비어 있는 공간을 통해 눈앞의 풍경이 기억과 내면의 시간으로 변화하는 순간을 탐구한다.

바다와 숲, 산사와 기도의 사물, 왕릉과 고분, 서원과 향교는 서로 다른 대상이지만 고요와 시간, 인간의 흔적을 바라보는 하나의 시선으로 이어진다. 사진 속에서 인간은 풍경을 지배하는 중심이 아니라 오랜 시간 속에 잠시 나타났다가 사라지는 작은 존재로 머문다.

Seo Seok-Jang has long photographed the sea, mountain temples, ancient tombs and architecture, and the traces people leave behind. For him, travel is a process of pausing before unfamiliar spaces and encountering the time and silence accumulated within them.

His work begins in the subtle distance between nature, architecture, and human traces. Through high-contrast black-and-white imagery, pronounced grain, restrained color, and empty space, he explores the moment when a visible landscape becomes memory and inward time.

The sea and forest, mountain temples and objects of prayer, royal tombs and tumuli, seowon and hyanggyo are connected by a single contemplative gaze toward silence, time, and human presence. In his photographs, people do not dominate the landscape; they remain small and transient within a much longer passage of time.

Seo Seok-Jang has held three solo exhibitions and participated in photography exhibitions and cultural heritage documentation projects in Korea and abroad.
